Biblical Covenants

The five major covenants are structural anchors in the Bible Brief curriculum. They show how God's promises unfold from creation through Christ and shape the flow of the timeline.

Noahic Covenant

Beginning era

Recipient

Noah & all creation

Sign

Rainbow

Key Scripture

Genesis 8-9

After the Great Flood, God promised Noah that He would never again destroy the earth with water. The rainbow became a memorial of this promise. This covenant applies to all of creation and demonstrates God's commitment to preserve the world until His redemptive plan is complete.

Core promises

  • God will never again flood the earth in judgment
  • Seasons and natural order will continue
  • God preserves humanity despite sin

Abrahamic Covenant

~2000 BC

Fathers era

Recipient

Abraham & his seed

Sign

Circumcision

Key Scripture

Genesis 12, 15, 17, 22

God called Abram from Ur of the Chaldeans to a new land, promising him land, seed, and blessing. This covenant of land, seed, and blessing forms the boundaries of the narrative for much of the rest of the Old Testament. The three basic promises point to a particular future seed who will bless all nations.

Core promises

  • Land: The land of Canaan as an inheritance
  • Seed: Offspring in abundance, a great nation
  • Blessing: All nations blessed through Abraham's seed

Sinai (Mosaic) Covenant

~1500 BC

Nation era

Recipient

Nation of Israel

Sign

Sabbath

Key Scripture

Exodus 19-24; Deuteronomy

At Mount Sinai, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments and a body of laws to govern the nation. The covenant stipulated blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. If the people obeyed, they would enjoy blessing in Canaan; if they disobeyed, they would experience cursing and exile. The Sabbath rest became the sign of this covenant.

Core promises

  • Blessing in the land for obedience to the Law
  • Israel to be God's treasured possession
  • A kingdom of priests and a holy nation

Davidic Covenant

~1000 BC

Kingdom era

Recipient

King David & his descendants

Key Scripture

2 Samuel 7; 1 Chronicles 17

Rather than allow David to build God a house, Yahweh announced promises to David: dynasty, kingdom, and king. David would have a dynasty of descendants ruling over Israel, a kingdom established forever, and from his line would come one ultimate seed—an everlasting king to rule over David's everlasting kingdom. This further develops the Abrahamic promise of the blessing seed.

Core promises

  • Dynasty: A line of descendants ruling over Israel
  • Kingdom: An everlasting kingdom established forever
  • King: An ultimate seed to reign as everlasting king

New Covenant

~33 AD

Messiah era

Recipient

House of Israel & House of Judah (and all believers)

Sign

The Cup (Lord's Supper)

Key Scripture

Jeremiah 31:31-34; Luke 22:20; Hebrews 8

Prophesied by Jeremiah 600 years before, Jesus ratified this covenant with His own blood at the Last Supper. Unlike the Sinai Covenant which Israel broke, the New Covenant transforms hearts from the inside. Jesus announced "This cup is the new covenant in my blood." Through His death and resurrection, sins are forgiven and believers receive new hearts of faith.

Core promises

  • God's law written on hearts, not stone tablets
  • All will know the Lord from least to greatest
  • Sins forgiven and remembered no more
